Oh Mei Ma, designed by Ingo Maurer in 1993, is a light object made of six floating sails of Japanese paper. On the Gold version, Munich craftsmen gild each sheet by hand in a meticulous process, and every set is made to order. Below the sails hangs a Plexiglass plumb bob that holds the whole construction in tension.
An LED shines down onto a reflector plate on the counterweight, which throws the light back up onto the sails; their surfaces return it as a warm, glamorous glow that suits high rooms in particular. A small blue LED uplight tints the ceiling softly, deepening the contrast with the golden reflections.
