Kabir is the Arabic word for 'big', and Oh Mei Ma Kabir, designed by Ingo Maurer and Team in 1997, is the grand version of Oh Mei Ma. Six sails of Japanese paper, gilded by hand in a special process, float beneath the ceiling, held taut by fine ropes, with a clear plumb bob hanging at the centre.
The upper light shines down onto a reflector plate and is thrown back onto the sails, so almost seven square metres of gold leaf fill tall rooms with a warm glow. A second light at the bottom adds a downlight, and a small blue LED uplight tints the ceiling softly, a cool counterpoint to the gold.
