Ilios, designed by Franz Ringelhan with Ingo Maurer in 1983, is a floor lamp reduced to almost nothing. Two slender metal rods rise in a narrow V from a pair of flat base plates to a height of 190 cm, holding a small opal-glass bowl on a curved crossbar, with a red fluorescent insulator glowing at the foot.
Forty years on, the Ingo Maurer team has updated the classic with LED while keeping the design virtually unchanged. A small retrofit LED bulb behind the opal glass gives a warm glow with dim-to-warm technology, growing softer and more golden as it is dimmed with the slider on the transparent cable.
