How to Pick the Right Fixtures

A successful interior design combines a number of light sources at different levels of the room. Here is our guide to picking the right fixtures for every room.

How to Choose Dining Room Lighting?

A chandelier is a great choice for a dining room table. Generally, a chandelier should be about one-third the width of the dining room table. So a 5-foot round dining table (60 inches) needs a chandelier with a diameter of 20 inches. Oval or rectangular tables can take a slightly wider chandelier. A common solution is to select a chandelier based on the shape of the table. You can also hang matching pendant lights above your dining table to give the space a sense of balance and symmetry.

How to Choose Bedroom Lighting?

Chandeliers are some of the best bedroom ceiling lights because they add a little interest, warmth, and drama to a space. Ceiling fans, and floor & table lamps are also great additions to a bedroom, circulating airflow and providing sufficient illumination. To determine the right size ceiling lights, add the width and length of your room in feet, then use the sum to determine the diameter of your light in inches. For example, a 10-by-12-foot bedroom would work best with a 22-inch diameter pendant.

How to Choose Kitchen Lighting?

As a rule of thumb, you must have general or ambient lighting in the centre of the kitchen. Do this by installing recessed ceiling lights or flush mounts. Additionally, if you have an island or a breakfast counter, consider utilizing pendant lighting. When installing pendant lights, a set of three should be just as high up, spaced apart evenly, and be at least six inches from the edge of the island. Alternatively, linear suspension lights work well in the kitchen especially if you have higher ceilings and can hang one at least 40” above your countertop.

How to Choose Bathroom and Vanity Lighting?

Bathrooms are rooms where a significant amount of tasks are complete daily. Lighting your bathroom correctly create a relaxed and restful atmosphere along with a funtctional space where you can complete tasks such as grooming and makeup application. While you want to ensure you have plenty of light, be sure to choose one that is no wider than your vanity or cabinet width, which may be wider than your mirror. Most people choose vanity bar lights that are about 75 percent of the mirror's total width. In addition to a vanity light, you can add a flushmount or LED Channel Recessed Lighting for additional ambient lighting in larger bathroom spaces.

How to Choose Living Room lighting?

Combining a range of living room lighting ideas creates the layers that are necessary – making the space warm and relaxing, bright enough for specific tasks, or evoking the right ambience. When you are designing your living room you should consider three light sources: overall ambient lighting, bright task lights, and decorative accent lamps. For instance, a table lamp typically reflects some light out the top and bottom of the shade spreading it out more below, whereas a chandelier may radiate light in all directions. It's a good idea to color code the different types of lighting on your final lighting plan to match the tone of your room.

How to Choose Outdoor Lighting?

Outdoor pendant lights or outdoor fans can be used to add overall ambient lighting in your outdoor space. Path lighting is soft to moderately bright safety and landscape lighting designed to help you navigate walkways while attractively highlighting them. Outdoor wall lighting is a low-voltage, moderately bright form of safety and accent lighting used to illuminate and improve navigation in small recessed areas of the yard where shadows lurk. Deck lighting is standard-voltage, moderate- to high-intensity lighting designed to help folks get up, down, and across the deck by night, avoiding tripping hazards and visual clutter, and also accentuate nearby garden features. Spot lighting is standard-voltage landscaping lighting used to shine narrow, moderate- to high-intensity beams upwards, usually to showcase a plant or ornamental feature.
