Fans Buying Guide

Here is our guide to buying the best fan for your indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Types of Ceiling Fans

Indoor Ceiling Fans are a fantastic addition to a room, balancing both function and beauty. They are ideal for homes because they help to evenly distribute and circulate the air that's in the room. Essentially, the moving fan blades generate a wind-chill effect, and they truly make a room feel cooler. Often, ceiling fans are considered outdated or traditional. This has changed within the last decade after designers have started to create sleek, modern, and stylish fans that would suit even the most modern spaces.

Why should I invest in a ceiling fan?

In the summer, ceiling fans allow you to feel cool without relying on the air conditioning all the time, ultimately saving energy and money. Setting your thermostat higher with a ceiling fan running can save up to 40% on air conditioning bills.

What is the difference between a smart fan and a regular ceiling fan?

Unlike your regular ceiling fan where the only connection is a pull cord or wiring in your wall, smart ceiling fans operate via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This means you can remotely control and program them to operate within a given setting and schedule even while you are away from home from your iOS or Android device. Modern ceiling lighting brands such as, Modern Forms have a large collection of smart ceiling fans available in different styles.

Outdoor Fans are great for cooling down the area during the day and circulating cool evening breezes. Whether you need to step outside for just a moment or want to lounge on the porch furniture, the movement of air produced by an outdoor fan will help protect you from unpleasant heat or humidity.

What ceiling fan size do I need?

Compare the fan blade sweep, or diameter, to the room’s square footage to determine the right ceiling fan for your room. Multiply the length times the width to determine the room’s square footage. For example, a 12- by 15-foot room will have a square footage of 180 feet.

1. Install a fan with a 42-inch sweep in rooms up to 144 feet.

2. Install a fan with a 44-inch sweep in rooms from 144 to 225 feet.

3. Install a fan with a 52-inch sweep in rooms from 225 to 400 feet.

4. Larger rooms may need more than one fan.
